Teacher unions call off strike
Three pre-tertiary teacher unions have called off their two-week-long strike, which commenced nationwide on March 20, 2024, citing the government's failure to address their conditions of service.
The decision to end the strike comes after the National Labour Commission (NLC) secured an interim injunction to halt the industrial action, paving the way for negotiations to begin.
These unions, comprising the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), jointly announced the end of the strike in a media statement issued in Accra on Tuesday.
King Ali Awudu, President of the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana, emphasized the importance of prompt engagement in negotiations by their employers to address their grievances.
"As law-abiding citizens and in adherence to the court's directives, we hereby terminate the strike that commenced on March 20, 2024. We urge all our members and pre-tertiary education teachers in the country to return to work immediately," stated Awudu.
He further urged the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations to initiate negotiations without delay.
"We urge the employer, led by the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, to commence negotiations this afternoon, on April 2, 2024. This will expedite the negotiation process and prevent similar incidents in the future," he concluded.
