Controversial comedy: Relax, we don't mean any harm, it's just entertainment – Ghana Comedy Awards CEO
Dennis Boateng has asked comedy concertgoers to always remember the noble intentions of performers.
“One thing everybody has to know is the reason we do comedy is to entertain people and make them laugh,” he told Prince Benjamin (PB) on the Class Morning Show on Class 91.3 FM.
He emphasised there are no hidden intentions, by comedians, to “make somebody feel bad about themselves”.
He encouraged audiences to loosen up, “look at the comedic side of everything” as they observe the ironies and absurdities of life through the therapeutic art of comedy.
Some comic materials “may be hard-punching” and uncomfortable, he admitted, but assured the “focus” is always “to make you laugh” and nothing else.
“We want you to laugh. We want you yourself in that situation to laugh even though we are talking about you [perhaps] in that [uncomfortable] way," he said, cracking a smile.
The founder and CEO of the Ghana Comedy Awards, therefore, advised against nitpicking and threatening to attack comedians because of their performances.
“Let’s loosen up,” he beseeched.
He explained some things are “out of the scripting” and spontaneous, and “we look out for trending issues, some things that people want to hear” even if they are sensitive.
“We’re not coming in to knock you on the head,” he assured. “We’re just coming to [playfully] pinch the cheeks for you to smile. It’s important so they should bear with us.”
While “tensions are high” in an election year, he noted “that is why we do comedy.
“When the tensions are low, your blood pressure will come down, and you’ll be healthy. So don’t pay attention to the things that will make your temper go high. Come on, relax. We’ll make you laugh.”
He lightheartedly observed how comedians “even use me for jokes all the time”. He said this is one of the reasons he moves around during his events since sitting at one place and being spotted by a performer could make him an easy target.
Dennis Boateng thanked his team profusely, especially the Ghana Comedy Awards board members: “Hon Fritz Baffour, Mickey Osei Berko, Tommy Annan-Forson, Socrates Safo, GH Comedians Association President Percy Obrempong and one of his able lieutenants coming to serve as well, Nino – it’s been amazing.”
Announcing that the awards show will be followed by a local and international tour, he invited sponsors to come along, asking them to reach his team via +233-245-95-85-27.
